Originally the site of a Saxon monastery, Tetbury grew in size and prosperity with the wool trade during the middle ages, a period that much of the town centre dates from.
Legend has it that local men used to race up and down the town’s steep Gumstool hill carrying heavy sacks of wool to test their strength.
Every May Tetbury comes alive with a continuation of the tradition - the annual Woolsack races, now given world championship status.
